First was that prayer is simple enough for a child to do. There is no rule of prayer. Looking into the Bible we see a number of "styles" of prayer. We simply need to do it.
Second, find time in your day to pray, even if only 2-5 minutes. Then take a look at your monthly schedule and set up a time for some extended prayer. Our Youth Ministry has the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 6:30-7:30am set aside for prayer (leaders do show for this). Third, make a list. This really helps me to keep focused and be purposeful during my prayer time.
There are a lot of tips on how to spend the time you set aside for prayer. One that I have found easy to remember is ACTS:
Adoration - Telling God how awesome He is.
Confession - Asking God to search your heart and life and then confessing to Him the areas of our
lives that don't honor Him.
Thanksgiving - Simply telling God thank you for all He has done and provided for you.
Supplication - Not a very common word but it basically means asking the Lord for our needs and praying
for those in our lives, community, world and even our enemies.
My encouragement for us all is to watch our lives and look for lessons that God might be wanting to teach us. For me it was my daughters reminding me that God hears all of us, even a child.
