What I appreciate about our time is that there does not have to be a consensus on a topic among all of us. We can all land at different places on the pendulum. I think this is good. There is a danger when we start to say everyone has to believe like me, look like me and worship like me. As we equip students in their faith and help them to form their theology, we hope to create in them a sense of openness. I'm not talking about universalism, but definitely an openness to conversation. If we can help students understand that there is value, friendship and things to learn from others who hold different theological views, then I think we are helping to form stronger followers of Christ.
How tight are your own fists when it comes to those who view topics of the Christian faith differently than you? Are you open to discussion, or even to the possibility that God could want to change your theology on a topic? Could your youth ministry be better if you heard from different voices on different issues? I hope you would pray about how God might use theology to change your youth ministry.
